KNIN, April 17 (Hina) - In accordance of an order of the Hague
Tribunal (ICTY) and the consent of the Croatian government,
representatives of the Croatian judiciary and the ICTY Prosecution
on Tuesday started a joint investigation at the town cemetery in
Knin (southern Croatia).
They should establish the cause of the death of some persons who
were buried in this graveyard after the 1995 liberating operation
of the Croatian army and police called "Storm".
The probe commenced with the fencing of three sites, which are
together large several hundred square metres. The area was also
combed by mine removal experts and maps were drawn up prior to the
exhumation. The up-to-date equipment was transferred to Knin for
this purpose.
The Croatian government met the request of the Prosecution of the
International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)
about the unearthing of some graves at the Knin cemetery so that the
truth may be established about the events in the Croatian Homeland
War and possible perpetrators prosecuted.
In the past the Croatian Helsinki Committee asserted that about 330
corpses had been buried at the said sites, while some non-
governmental organisations claimed that there might be over 400
killed Serb civilians.
