ZAGREB, April 14 (Hina) - The northern bottlenose whale (Hyperoodon ampullatus) which entered Zupa Bay near Cavtat about a month and a half ago was reported dead on Thursday. Friday's issue of the Vecernji List daily carried a
statement by Vlado Onofri of Dubrovnik's Institute for Oceanography and Fishery saying the whale had been sick and probably died of a parasitic disease. The whale will be transported to the Zagreb Faculty of Veterinary Medicine for autopsy. Marijana Petir, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Zoning, said the ministry had taken measures of protection of this sea mammal as soon as it had received sighting reports. Environmental Protection and Zoning Minister Bozo Kovacevic then adopted a decree on measures of protection for the northern bottlenose whale banning the use of some types of fishing equipment in the area where the whale was spotted.
