SPLIT, April 6 (Hina) - The central Croatian association for the
protection of the dignity of Homeland War (known as the
Headquarters) has sent an official request to the Croatian
Parliament to make it possible for Headquarters members to submit a
list with 400,000 signatures needed for the adoption of a
constitutional law which would protect all Croatian war veterans
from criminal prosecution, the association's president Mirko
Condic said today. Homeland War veterans want the same status
"granted to all armies of the western world as well as to the members
of the anti-fascist movement in Croatia."
Addressing a news conference, Condic repeated accusations that the
Croatian authority was a "puppet authority", which, he said, was
not protecting the interests of the Croatian state and people but
"is doing the opposite."
"The international community has been humiliating the Croatian
people with the help of the incumbent authority, by questioning the
first man of the Croatian army (General Petar Stipetic), and with
the latest attempts to impute war crimes in the operation
'Storm'."
"The only possible way to stop and thwart the plans of the
international community to break the backbone of the Croatian
people and dissolve its national pride is a mass turnout at a
referendum and the adoption of laws which the people are seeking,"
he said concluding that "if the authority is not willing to do so, it
will have to fall" because "the Constitution has to be respected."
