During debate, MPs of the Croatian Democratic Union, the strongest
opposition party, emphasised Croatia must not depart from the
principle of joining the European Union on an individual basis.
They also warned that European institutions officially use the
expression "Western Balkans."
Croatia's chief negotiator with the EU Neven Mimica said the
European Commission uses the notion of the Western Balkans only as a
technical expression. The government has been given assurances by
the Commission as to the individual approach, but Croatia has to be
willing to contribute to stability in Southeast Europe, he added.
Mimica dismissed allegations that as a condition to join the EU,
Croatia has been asked to enter a customs union with other countries
in the region. He reminded this condition was not contained in the
final document of last November's Zagreb Summit.
