ZAGREB, March 26 (Hina) - Zagreb police deputy superintendent
Zdravko Senicnjak has been replaced because he failed to solve the
problem of organised crime in Zagreb although he was familiar with
the identity of mob ring leaders, Croatian police director Ranko
Ostojic told reporters in Zagreb on Monday.
In an interview with Monday issue of the Jutarnji List daily,
Senicnjak said that he had been replaced because he knew who mob
leaders were and that "people who can counter organised crime are
being removed from the system."
Ostojic confirmed Senicnjak's first statement, adding that
Senicnjak, if he had known the identity of those involved in
organised crime, should have dealt with it. Ostojic dismissed
Senicnjak's claims that he had been prevented from doing so.
"At the time when we are carrying out our most important activities
and solving cases which have disturbed the public I will not allow
anyone, especially not persons holding the highest positions, to
write complaints and do things we can do without at the moment,"
Ostojic said.
He dismissed claims from today's issue of the Republika daily that
Senicnjak cooperated outside of official channels with Zagreb
Deputy State Prosecutor Dunja Pavlicek Patak, prosecutor in the
current Zagreb mobster trial, and that he tried to prevent the
search of the apartment of Vjeko Slisko, who sustained severe
injuries in last week's mob shooting in downtown Zagreb.
Ostojic said that disciplinary proceedings would be initiated
against Senicnjak due to his unauthorised public statements.
