ZAGREB, March 23 (Hina) - A world-famous Albanian writer, Ismail
Kadare, on Thursday condemned violence as a means of the struggle
for the exercise of Macedonian Albanians' rights, and said he could
see the settlement of the Albanian issue in a future democratic
Europe without frontiers.
Rebel Albanians in Macedonia are fighting for the Albanian rights
(in that country) in an inadequate manner and by inadequate means,
Kadare told reporter in Zagreb on Thursday evening after his talks
with Croatian President Stjepan Mesic.
They (rebels) do not enjoy the support of the public in the Republic
of Albania, asserted Kadare who arrived in Zagreb at an invitation
of his Croatian publisher.
The entire Albanian public - the official Albania and intellectuals
- has criticised this form of the struggle for the Albanians'
rights, he asserted.
This, however, must not be an excuse for all the relevant factors in
the region to fail to do anything or not to seek a political
solution, he cautioned.
Asked how it would be possible to solve the Albanian issue without
war, the writer answered it would be possible in the future united
democratic Europe without frontiers, such as the European Union in
which border lines were annulled under the Schengen agreement.
The Albanian people settles a certain area in the Balkans, but that
area was artificially divided with the incumbent borders and is the
cause of "a permanent neurosis", he explained.
He added that Albanians had accepted and realised that it was
impossible to change the existent frontiers.
