ZAGREB, March 22 (Hina) - Some 3,500 redundant workers at the
Croatian Railways (HZ) will be provided for through re-employment
and in line with a social programme adopted by the Croatian
government on Thursday.
The problem of surplus manpower will also be resolved through self-
employment, the filling of recently opened vacancies within the
company or its separate or privatised segments, and through
cooperation with other institutions.
The programme also provides for disabled workers whereas war
veterans will have advantage in keeping their positions if they

With the aim of implementing the programme, a centre for supporting
operation changes and a foundation for support to human resources
will be set up. The foundation will provide support for surplus
manpower and stimulate their employment. The HZ will secure two
million kuna, the government 5.4 and the World Bank 1.6 million kuna
for the foundation's work.
Should the programme prove to be successful, it could become the
model for providing for surplus manpower in some regions, towns and
municipalities, says Labour and Social Welfare Minister Davorko
Vidovic.
