ZAGREB, March 8 (Hina) - Alongside Italy and Spain, Croatia is the
most sought-after tourist destination among European campers
according to data of the European Federation of Camping
Organisations (EFCO), which has been recording a continuous
increase in interest for Croatian camping destinations.
Zagreb is presently hosting EFCO's annual, 44th congress, which
gathered representatives of national camping associations from 18
countries. It has been organised by the Camping Association of
Croatia and closes on the 11th.
Opening the congress, EFCO secretary general Ros Pritchard said
campers account for 23 percent of the entire number of Europe's
tourists and for 22 percent of the entire tourist turnover. They are
being given more attention because camping represents a specific
form of eco-tourism which acknowledges a country's biological
diversity and promotes the active protection and preservation of
the environment, he added.
The director of the Croatian Tourist Association, Niko Bulic, said
every third tourist coming to Croatia was a camper. The most visited
Croatian region is the northern Adriatic peninsula of Istria, which
records 60 percent of all camping overnights. Special attention
will be given to reviving camping destinations in the southern
region of Dalmatia, said Bulic.
EFCO was founded in 1978 with the basic task of developing and
advancing economic, legal, and technical activities related to the
camping sector. The organisation numbers 20,000 camps in 18
European countries.
