NEW YORK, March 6 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament should soon adopt
a national programme for gender equality as prepared by the
government's commission for gender equality in cooperation with
non-government organisations, Croatian Vice-President and the
commission chairwoman, Zeljka Antunovic, said at the 45th session
of the UN Commission for the Status of Women in New York Tuesday.
Antunovic spoke about the activities of the government and other
factors in Croatia in securing gender equality, as well as the
general equality of citizens.
She recalled Croatia recently ratified an Optional Protocol to the
Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination
against Women.
In November of last year Zagreb hosted an expert meeting on gender
and racial discrimination. The document which came out of the
meeting will serve as a foundation for a world conference on racism
taking place in South Africa this September.
Antunovic assessed Croatia's highest achievements in the subject
matter were changes to the Constitution where "gender equality is
granted one of the highest values of constitutional order".
Speaking about the two issues of the commission's work, Antunovic
said that "the best way of prevention of (HIV/AIDS) is timely
education at all levels".
Regarding gender and racial discrimination, the Vice-President
said a consensus must be reached that "even the most insignificant
forms of discrimination must be eliminated".
