DUBROVNIK, March 1 (Hina) - The Apostolic Nuncio to Croatia, Giulio
Einaudi, on Wednesday evening, bestowed "Vukovar Cross" on
Dominicans in the southern Croatian coastal town of Dubrovnik.#L#
The Cross, made by Croatian naive artists in tribute to the war-hit
eastern town of Vukovar, was the present of John Paul II to
Dubrovnik. During his second pastoral visit to Croatia in 1998, the
Holy Father was presented with this Cross by the naive arts centre.
He then decided to give it to another Croatian town-martyr, and
Dubrovnik, i.e. the Dominican monastery, was chosen.
The three-metre-high Vukovar Cross contains 15 original glass
paintings which present the Stations of the Cross.
At last night's ceremony, Msgr. Einaudi described the Vukovar Cross
as a sign of God's mercy and love as well as of the Croatian people's
faith.
First Deputy Prime Minister Goran Granic added the cross connected
the two towns which had suffered most in the war and which
symbolised the establishment of the Croatian state.
