This high-ranking officer sustained serious injuries in a road accident at Karlovac-Zagreb motor way on 13 December, and died in a Zagreb hospital on 21 December. Croatian President Stjepan Mesic posthumously bestowed on Gen. Raey a high Croatian decoration for his courageous contribution to the process of humanitarian demining in Croatia.
