The event pooled about 100 representatives of constitutional and
supreme courts, justice ministries, law schools, and attorneys
from nine countries, who discussed the reform of the judiciary, the
independence of courts, distraint, and ways of expediting court
proceedings.
The conference included two round-table debates on relieving the
burden of the judiciary and practical issues relating to
distraint.
Croatia's Deputy Justice Minister Miljenko Kovac said the German
Foundation for International Legal Cooperation provided Croatia
with significant expert assistance regarding the reform of the
judiciary.
Kovac said the government had adopted a strategy aimed at bringing
order into the justice system and expected the adoption of several
laws aimed at expediting proceedings.
He also announced the establishment of a Croatian Judicial Academy
on the French and German models.
