Minister Ivica Racan called on his cabinet to be influential in
raising awareness of the extent of the problem of violence against

Last year men killed 22 women, attempted to kill 66 and gravely
injured 222 women in Croatia, Racan said, adding that data for this
year was not better.
Today the Racan cabinet is to decide on almost 450 amendments
submitted by MPs, parliament benches and working bodies to the
draft of the 2003 state budget.
Most amendments, which weigh around 3.5 billion kuna (EUR473
million), seek increasing funds, with only a few proposing cuts,
which is why the government will turn down most of them.
The finance minister has justified this move with the government's
intention to keep the state budget deficit around five percent of
Gross Domestic Product, which should slow down indebtedness
abroad.
After deciding on the amendments, they and the draft budget will be
forwarded into parliament which is expected to tackle them on
December 4 or 5.
