He warned that the situation was particularly difficult in the
countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, where millions of children were
dying from famine and illness every year.
Some Asian countries and countries of the Pacific Rim have had
success in the fight against poverty over the past two years,
Simonovic said.
Although dissatisfied, we can say that most countries could still
achieve set development goals until 2015, he added.
Speaking about important successes of the international community
in the past 12 months, Simonovic mentioned the changes in
Afghanistan, and East Timor's joining the international community
and the UN.
The fight against terrorism has been yielding positive results, he
said, calling for respect for human rights in that fight.
The protection of national security cannot be achieved at the
expense of human rights, the ambassador said, adding that the
promotion of human rights, democracy and social justice
contributed to the prevention of terrorism.
