BJELOVAR, Aug 29 (Hina) - Due to frequent attacks on police
officers, the Croatian Police Union (SPH) demands an amendment to
the Law on Police, Criminal Procedure Act and Penal Code which would
give them more power in the situations of attacks, president of the
union Dubravko Jagic said in Bjelovar on Thursday. #L#
The reason for such a request is a recent attack on two policemen,
Alen Petrovic and Vice Sucic, who were beaten up by several
hooligans in a Bjelovar coffee shop. The two policemen sustained
serious injuries and a concussion. They were treated in the
Bjelovar general hospital.
Jagic claims the two policemen were beaten up because they were not
allowed to use their authorities. He added that soon after the
assaults on police officers, judges often release hooligans, which
was not the case in Bjelovar. The hooligans in Bjelovar were
sentenced to 40 days in prison, which, according to Jagic, is an
appropriate sentence.
The police union believes that the interior and justice ministries
are slow. They demand amendments to the law and stricter sanctions
which would protect police officers. The union also demands that it
be clearly stated in which situations a police officers is allowed
to use his weapon.
