A statement issued by the Croatian Foreign Ministry on Thursday
said that Picula spoke by telephone to Slovene Foreign Minister,
Dimitrij Rupel, following Thursday's latest incident in the Piran
Bay when several Slovene fishing boats again invaded and fished in
Croatian territorial waters.
The latest events in the Piran Bay do not contribute to the complex
partnership relations which were discussed during the last meeting
in Bezanec, Picula told his Slovene colleague.
It is necessary to remedy the current situation as soon as possible
and to organise a meeting of the Commission for the Implementation
the Agreement on Border Traffic and Cooperation, and a fishery sub-
commission contained within the same agreement, as well as to
overcome any misunderstandings to prevent any further incidents,
the Croatian minister said.
The statement notes Rupel stressed that he agreed with Picula's
statement that negotiations should be expedited. He said that
incidents like these were of no use either to Croatia or Slovenia
and it was necessary to implement appropriate mechanisms to find a
solution that would satisfy both sides.
