Only 13 of some 90 prisoners, who on the night between 13 and 14 July
1941 tried to break out from the prison, managed to survive.
The president of the Association of Anti-Fascist Fighters (SAB) of
Zagreb and Zagreb County, Vladimir Jurak, said more and more people
were coming to Kerestinec every year to commemorate the event. He
expressed hope that young people would recognise "the breakout as a
breakthrough towards democracy".
Many Croatian leftist intellectuals and anti-fascists, including
August Cesarec, Ognjen Prica, and Otokar Kersovani, were
imprisoned and killed in Kerestinec.
Today's event was organised by the SAB from Zagreb and Zagreb
County. SAB representatives, anti-fascist fighters from
neighbouring Slovenia, and officials of the Social Democratic
Party (SDP) and the Socialist Workers' Party (SRP) laid wreaths and
lit candles at a monument to the Kerestinec victims.
