Some fifty pages of Volume III of the encyclopaedia (pp. 2237-
2287), published by the French publishing company "Society de
Biospeleologie" presents an overview of the water and land fauna of
Croatia's 'underground' with an exhaustive overview of the history
of this field's research and a large number of illustrations and
usual bibliographic additions of a very high standard.
The entry, which presents Croatian research of fauna for the first
time, systematically encompasses this topic in a complete fashion
and was presented in honour of World Earth Day, April 22.
The presenters of the entry were: academician Milan Mestrov,
Gottestein-Matocec, a lecturer at the Mathem./Biol. Faculty and
President of the Croatian Biospeleological Society Roman Ozimec -
expressed their pride in the fact that Croatian science has finally
been given a deserved place in the world biological public.
Of about 400 underwater species, 173 were recorded in Croatia,
while of a total of 600 land underground species, 316 were
"Croatian". Of that, about 230 are endymes which represents a true
hotbed of biological variety, experts said.
Amongst the endymes, there is a unique underground vertebrates and
sweet-water shells in Europe and the only underground sponge
recorded in the world.
