BELGRADE, March 29 (Hina) - War crimes indictees will be extradited
to the UN tribunal at The Hague in the coming days, Serbian Prime
Minister Zoran Djindjic said on Friday. #L#
His statement is a confirmation of similar ones made recently by
Serbian Justice Minister Vladan Batic and the head of the DOS ruling
coalition's bench in the Serbian parliament, Cedo Jovanovic.
Djindjic criticised Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica for
opposing cooperation with the Hague tribunal. Voicing fear
Yugoslavia could face international sanctions very soon, he said
that those who could not lead the state and assume responsibility
for unpopular moves should not hold such an office.
"I don't exclude the possibility that the majority of citizens
don't want cooperation with the Hague tribunal and want to bear the
consequences," said Djindjic. The only other option is to extradite
all those indicted by the UN tribunal, he added.
Failure to comply with the tribunal's requests will result in
international sanctions, the refusal of at least US$100 million in
loans from the International Monetary Fund, the Paris club of
creditors, and the Council of Europe, and a blockade of
Yugoslavia's integration into Europe, according to Djindjic.
He described Kostunica's announcement of possible unrest and
destabilisation in case of new extraditions as a threat. Kostunica
should say clearly that he is against cooperation with the Hague
tribunal and assume responsibility for the consequences, he said.
Kostunica's Democratic Party of Serbia reiterated today that the
extradition of Yugoslav citizens to the Hague without a cooperation
law was counter-constitutional.
