SINJ, March 3 (Hina) - The Association of Veterans and Admirers of
Sinjska Alka on Sunday issued a statement in response to
accusations by the coordinating body of Homeland War associations
active in the Sinj area, which earlier this week accused it of
obstructing the Sinjska Alka annual tournament and its tradition.
The Association says the Sinj-based body is "completely exclusive
in its imputations," and should "accept the fact that (the)
Association was founded out of love for the Alka." The Association
also accuses the body of having reserved the tournament for
itself.
The Association was founded on February 24, due to the growing
politicisation of the tournament which, it was said at the founding
assembly, reached its peak at the end of last year's ceremonies,
when the winner was forbidden to receive a gift by a delegate of
President Stjepan Mesic.
In today's statement, the Association says it is ashamed that last
year's tournament had such an ugly orchestrated end.
Our goal is to return the tournament to its roots and leave politics
out of its essence and fate, the Association says.
