ZAGREB, Jan 8 (Hina) - The Zagreb County State Prosecutor's Office
has requested that dialysers produced by the US pharmaceutical
company Baxter be evaluated by Dutch experts so that it could be
established if the dialysers caused the death of 23 kidney patients
in Croatia in October last year.
Having considered criminal charges and documentation, the Zagreb
County State Prosecutor's Office requested that the Zagreb County
Court Investigative Centre with the help of international lawyers
carry out investigative measures abroad aimed at the toxicology
evaluation of the said dialysers and biological samples with the
aim of establishing the cause of the patients' death and other
relevant circumstances, State Prosecutor Radovan Ortynski said on
Tuesday.
The State Prosecutor's Office based its request on a report by the
Interior Ministry's Criminology Centre "Ivan Vucetic" according to
which the analysed dialysers contained a poisonous chemical
substance called perfluoroisobutylen, which may have caused the
patients' death.
On December 21 the Zagreb police submitted a special report and
filed charges with the Zagreb County Prosecutor's Office against
still unknown responsible persons at "Baxter" for having committed
a criminal act against people's health by "making damaging products
for medical treatment."
