Recalling the visit of Pope John Paul II to Croatia, Mesic reiterated
the pope's wholehearted advocacy of Croatia and wish that Croatia join
the European community of peoples.
"An additional dimension to that visit is given by your appointment as
a cardinal of the Catholic Church, which is an acknowledgement both to
you and entire Croatia," Mesic said in the message.
Commenting on the November 23 parliamentary elections, Mesic said that
citizens had demonstrated a high level of democratic culture while
parties had demonstrated civilised political rivalry.
"This all encourages us to believe that with such high standards of
political culture the new government will continue building Croatia as
a country of human dignity, peace and well-being, and lead it into the
circle of European Union countries, in whose spiritual and material
development we want to participate on the basis of partnership."
President Mesic also said he was confident that relations between
government institutions and the Catholic Church would continue
developing to the general well-being of all citizens.
Mesic extended his best wishes for Christmas and the New Year also to
archbishops, bishops, clergy and all Catholic believers in and outside
Croatia.
