ZAGREB, Dec 19 (Hina) - The Zagreb Municipal Court has given the
government eight days to provide lawyers for General Ante Gotovina
with documents it sent to the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague.#L#
The court issued the order on Thursday following a request by the
defence counsel of the fugitive general who is being sought by the
Hague tribunal on war crimes charges.
The government had refused to hand over the 77 documents it handed
over to the Hague tribunal in September 1995 and some other documents
that were sent in February 2003, claiming that their delivery would
cause irreparable damage. It complained that the initial court
judgement did not specify who Gotovina's lawyers were, so it did not
know to whom it was to send the documents.
The government instead proposed through the Public Prosecutor as its
legal representative that the documents be kept in the custody of the
court until completion of the appeal proceedings, but the court
rejected the proposal.
The government has eight days to appeal against the latest ruling.
