ZAGREB, Nov 28 (Hina) - The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) on
Friday issued a statement dismissing rumours of revenge seeking and
purges, stating that it advocated full freedom of the media and was
against any pressure being exerted on the media. #L#
The right to information is one of the basic principles of democracy
and the media must have an autonomous and important role in society,
the statement reads. The media are the mirror of democracy and the
HDZ will not meddle in the editorial policy of any media, reads the
statement.
Commenting on the latest media reports and speculations, the HDZ
said it wanted to reiterate that the new government would not take
revenge on anyone. Rumours to that effect and about purges come from
the parties which were unsuccessful in the elections and now want to
justify their poor results and create an atmosphere of anxiety
among employees in public companies, the party said, calling for
mutual tolerance and development of the culture of political
dialogue.
The HDZ will insist on an atmosphere that will contribute to pushing
Croatia upward from the 69th position on the international media
freedom scale so it could draw closer to the standards of mature
democracies, reads the party statement.
