Present at the talks in Opera hotel were representatives of the
Social Democrats (SDP), the Croatian Peasant Party, the Croatian
People's Party, and the coalition the Social Liberals (HSLS) and
the Democratic Centre (DC) formed for upcoming parliamentary
elections. The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) did not show up,
while the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) was not invited.
Mate Arlovic of the SDP informed reporters that Verheugen told them
that cooperation with the Hague war crimes tribunal for the former
Yugoslavia was the only condition hampering Croatia's admission to
the EU.
There was not much talk about the Nov. 23 polls, Arlovic said,
adding that Verheugen said the European Commission would continue
helping Croatia independently of electoral results.
Hrvoje Vojkovic said on behalf of the HSLS-DC the coalition was
determined to continue drawing closer to the EU and that hurdles on
the road should be removed through resolute diplomatic action.
