The mild increase in unemployment can be mostly attributed to the
re-registration of seasonal workers, which is common towards the
end of the year, HZZ director Sanja Crnkovic Pozaic said at a news
conference.
Unemployment has increased in 16 counties and the highest increase
has been registered in coastal counties. The employment rate is the
best in cities like Zagreb and Varazdin.
For the first time after several months, the employment barometer
is negative, which means that there were more redundancies than new
jobs.
Commenting on employment programmes from the CARDS programme,
which are financed by the European Union and are implemented
between 2002 and 2004, Crnkovic Pozaic said those programmes would
help reorganise the labour market, decentralise the HZZ and develop
local employment partnerships.
She announced for the next news conference an independent survey
with information on how much the drop in unemployment in the past
several years can be attributed to changes in the definition of
unemployment and how much to the creation of new jobs.
