ZAGREB, Oct 28 (Hina) - Croatia's Minister of Environmental
Protection and Zoning, Ivo Banac, has suggested that the Ministry
of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Communications adjust national
regulations on tanker transport to the newest European Union
legislation, under which tankers with a single bottom transporting
heavy oil are banned from entering the waters of EU member-
countries. #L#
The ministry issued a statement quoting information of the
international tanker owners' association INTERTANKO, saying that
the new regulations on the navigation of single bottom tankers in
the waters of EU member-countries went into force on October 21.
The regulations ban single bottom tankers transporting heavy oil
from sailing into and out of and anchoring in the EU's waters.
According to regulations on ballast water drafted by a Croatian
task force, "single bottom tankers transporting heavy oil and fuel
are allowed to enter the Croatian Adriatic waters if they are not
older than 15 years," which is in direct opposition to the said EU
regulations, Banac warned.
