ZAGREB, Oct 18 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivica Racan commented on Saturday on a statement by Zlatko Tomcic, the president of the parliament dissolved yesterday, to the effect that he would request that the powers of the next president
of parliament be expanded and his influence made equal to that of the President of the Republic and the PM.
ZAGREB, Oct 18 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivica Racan commented on
Saturday on a statement by Zlatko Tomcic, the president of the
parliament dissolved yesterday, to the effect that he would request
that the powers of the next president of parliament be expanded and
his influence made equal to that of the President of the Republic
and the PM. #L#
Racan said the matter could be discussed only if Tomcic meant giving
more legislative powers to parliament and its president.
"I hope Tomcic didn't mean that the president of the Croatian
parliament should take over powers which, under the Constitution,
belong to the President of the Republic or the executive authority.
That would be too inventive even for Croatia," he told reporters at
the end of a rally of his Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Zagreb.
Asked if the SDP might form a pre-election coalition with Libra and
the Liberal Party, Racan said the matter was under discussion and
that the decision would be revealed next week.
