The orchestra, conducted by Alexandar Dmitriyev, performed
Rachmaninoff's Concert No. 2 for the Piano and Orchestra in c-minor
Op. 18. The piano was played by Aleksandar Paley. In the second part
of the concert, the orchestra performed Shostakovich's Symphony
No. 7 in c-major Op. 60, the "Leningrad".
The St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra was established in 1931
as the Symphony Orchestra of the Leningrad Radio. It has held
concerts abroad since 1965. It performed with famous soloists
including David Oistrach, Sviatoslav Richter, Mstislav
Rostropovich, Isak Stern, and has been conducted by Igor
Stravinski, Yevgeny Svetlanov, Lorin Maazel, Kurt Mazur, Yehudi
Menuhin and others.
In 1985 the orchestra was named an academic orchestra.
