Talking to reporters after a brief conversation with Slovene Prime
Minister Anton Rop about Croatia's decision, Prodi said he had not
expected Croatia would take such a step because it was not in the
spirit of European policy.
He announced he should meet with representatives of Adriatic and
surrounding countries by the end of November in view of finding a
solution for the new situation.
Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi, with whom Rop held a brief talk as
well, said "a European solution should be arrived at" and that
"nobody wants a conflict". He added that Croatia's decision was
surprising given the general climate in Europe which was geared
towards cooperation and agreement.
The European Union's high representative for the common foreign and
security policy, Javier Solana, said he had not expected such a step
on Croatia's part and that now a compromise needed to be found.
