Talking to reporters during a visit to Medjimurje County, Mesic
said elections perhaps ought to be postponed if something happened
which might affect the regular course of events, "something which
might result in us getting at elections representatives who will
not pass European-oriented laws".
"From what we have seen so far it is evident that there are excesses
and messages which are inappropriate for this time, but we have to
focus on open issues and on teams which can solve them," Mesic said,
adding that this was something those who wished to be elected should
compete in.
The President is hopeful Croatia will get a fair, legal and European
campaign and elections.
Commenting on European Commission President Romano Prodi's
statement that it would not be a good idea to proclaim an economic
zone in the Adriatic before a conference on fishing in Venice in
late November, Mesic said he saw it as conducive to the defusing of
tensions so that all could pull themselves together a bit and see
what the matter was about.
"Croatia has the autonomous right to proclaim an exclusive economic
zone. Nobody can object to that and we don't wish to damage anyone.
We wish to bring the maximum benefit to the Adriatic Sea and all the
countries oriented towards it. If there are misunderstandings, I'm
for talking about them and for waiting with decisions," Mesic
said.
