Dubrovnik as the most popular tourist destination in the world in
the category of cities. #L#
Every two years Wanderlust publishes lists of the most popular
tourist destinations among countries and cities, based on readers'
votes.
Dubrovnik won this year's top city award, beating Peru's Cuzco,
Venice, and South Africa's Cape Town.
In an accompanying article, Wanderlust stresses that Dubrovnik is a
newcomer to the bi-annual travel awards. "The Croatian city was all
over our TV screens during the Balkan conflict in the early 90s, but
has only recently started attracting back the thousands of visitors
who became familiar with its appeal before the war, as well as new
visitors succumbing to its Mediterranean charms," reads the
article.
"Croatia has been the country on the lips of those in the know this
year, with Dubrovnik ? the 'Pearl of the Adriatic' ? as its
showpiece. Perhaps we could also now call it the 'Phoenix of the
Adriatic' ? it has deservedly risen from the ashes."
The results were taken from more than 1,500 readers who visited 557
cities and 185 countries in the January 2002 - August 2003 period.
