The two-day conference was opened by Croatian Vice-Premier Ante
Simonic, who said that it was part of international efforts to
promote human rights in the general sense, as well as their
economic, social and cultural aspects.
The purpose of the conference is to initiate and build constructive
dialogue promoting the understanding of economic, social and
cultural rights on the level of states and civil society, he added.
The conference will also address issues related to a draft
facultative protocol to the International Pact on Economic, Social
and Cultural Rights.
Conclusions of the conference will be sent to the UN Human Rights
Commission's task force in charge of drawing up the text of the
protocol, which will start operating at the start of next year.
The conference was organised by the Croatian government and the
International Bar Association with the support of the Finnish
government.
