The ministry said in a statement that it expected the perpetrators
to be identified and punished, and that it hoped that this act would
remain an isolated incident that would not diminish the efforts of
the local population to heal the wounds of war.
The monument to Major General Blago Zadro, one of the commanders of
the Croatian defence forces in Vukovar in 1991, was doused in grey
paint by unidentified persons late Saturday night. They also tried
to set fire to a Croatian flag, but failed. The flag was only
slightly burnt.
The act was also condemned by the leading opposition party, the
Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), and the Vukovar branch of the
Democratic Centre party.
