TROGIR, Aug 8 (Hina) - President Stjepan Mesic said on Friday that
proclamation of an exclusive economic zone in the Adriatic was not a
political, but economic issue which Croatia should resolve through
talks with its neighbours.
"The concern of the Slovenes over the proclamation of the economic
zone is unfounded. They must realise that it is also better for them
if Croatia has better control of its sea," Mesic told reporters
during a visit to the southern coastal town of Trogir.
The president was responding to questions regarding current
political and economic issues, including the case of Croatian Army
General Ante Gotovina, who is wanted by the UN war crimes tribunal
in The Hague.
Mesic repeated his earlier view that it was now up to Gotovina to
decide what to do.
"Now it's up to him to come forward and prove that he respects both
Croatian and international authorities and judiciary," Mesic said,
adding that the Gotovina case was one of the open issues in
Croatia's relations with the European Union.
Mesic had arrived in Trogir to attend the first international
contest of young tenors. During his visit, he held talks with local
government officials led by Split County prefect Kruno Peronja and
several parliamentary deputies.
