Finance Minister Mato Crkvenac told a news conference on Thursday
that corrections in the tax system would be based on the principle
under which well-off people would be obliged to contribute more to
the common good. He did not wish to reveal more details until the
adoption of a decision regarding this matter. He stressed, however,
this did not mean the introduction of a "tax on wealth" or any other
new taxes.
Changes in this year's budget, however, will not pertain to the
amount of revenue and expenditure, which will remain within the set
limits, but its structure will be changed due to direct expenses,
such as those caused by drought.
The way of financing firefighting activities will also temporary be
changed. As of September 1 until December 31, one percent, or a
total of 237 million kuna (EUR31.6 million) would be set aside from
income tax for this purpose.
