"Due to certain historical and political circumstances, Istria has
always gravitated not only to Europe as a geographical fact but also
to Europe as a political value," Picula told reporters in Pazin, a
town in the heart of the Istrian peninsula. Backing his statement,
he cited the fact that Istria County has been a member of the
Assembly of European Regions for more than 10 years.
"The incumbent government has made the rest of Croatia be genuinely
sensitive to European issues so that as of this summer, the question
is no longer 'if we enter the EU' but 'when we enter the EU'," the
minister said.
