banks ranks Croatia's Zagrebacka banka at 13 and Privredna banka

Ten Croatian banks have been included on the list, published in a
special issue of the Privredni vjesnik business magazine, making
Croatia third in terms of the number of banks ranked. It is preceded
by Poland and Hungary, and followed by the Czech Republic,
Slovakia, Slovenia, and Romania.
Besides Zagrebacka and Privredna, the list ranks Splitska banka at
number 53, Raiffeisen Bank Croatia at 53, Hrvatska postanska banka
at 61, Erste Steiermaerkische Bank at 68, Hypo Alpe Adria at 85, HVB
Bank Croatia at 88, Dalmatinska banka at 94, and Rijecka banka at
number 96.
Poland is first among the Central European top 100 according to the
number of banks, with 22 listed, followed by Hungary with 15,
Croatia with 10, and Slovakia with nine. Slovenia, the Czech
Republic, and Romania have eight banks on the list each, Bulgaria
has seven, Serbia-Montenegro, Lithuania, and Latvia have three
each, while Macedonia and Estonia have two each.
Foreigners dominate on the banking market of countries in
transition, say Privredni vjesnik analysts. Foreign banks and
investors currently hold two-thirds of the banking systems in eight
countries which will join the European Union in 2004. In the Czech
Republic, Estonia, and Croatia, foreigners' part-ownership
exceeds 90 percent.
