The Defence Ministry has approval only of the prime minister, and
not the whole government, to start talks with the United States on
sending Croatian troops to Iraq, because the Croatian Peasant Party
(HSS) opposed the decision yesterday, Budisa told a press
conference.
A decision on sending troops outside the Croatian borders can only
be adopted with a two-thirds majority of votes of all parliamentary
deputies, which is 102 votes, he said.
Since the coalition partners evidently have not harmonised their
views on the issue, parliament may reject the previous agreement
with the US, which "would additionally threaten the already shaken
relations with the US and result in new repercussions on US-
Croatian relations," the HSLS president concluded.
