Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, Culture Minister Antun Vujic and
other senior officials and celebrities attended the ceremony of the
opening.
The start of the festival was marked by the lifting of the Libertas
flag on the Orlando column. During this part of the ceremony two
balloons with images of retired general Ante Gotovina, wanted by
the UN war crimes tribunal, were launched from the audience in
downtown Dubrovnik. The word Sloboda (Freedom) was written on the
image of the general, who has been on the run since the ICTY issued
an indictment against him. The launching of the two balloons was
greeted by many in the audience with lengthy applause.
The programme of this year's festival, which pooled about a
thousand participants from Croatia and abroad, includes about 70
plays, concerts and many art exhibitions.
The opening ceremony ended with a firework display.
