Martino said that during its presidency of the EU Italy would put
special emphasis on the strengthening of the joint European defence
system, adding that it would not represent an alternative to NATO
but that its aim would be to address security issues together with
NATO, a statement from the Foreign Ministry said.
The talks also focused on modalities of Croatia joining a
multinational brigade as part of a regional initiative involving
Italy, Slovenia, Hungary and Croatia. The two ministers stressed
the importance of this kind of cooperation for stabilisation of the
situation in the region, the statement said.
