ZAGREB, June 30 (Hina) - Economic criteria for membership in the
European Union will be much easier to meet than political and
legislative requirements, as much has already been done on that
front, Croatia's European Integration Minister Neven Mimica said
at a session of the Zagreb Chamber of Commerce's (HGK) Economic
Council on Monday. #L#
Economic criteria are contained in a syntagm about the need to
establish a functioning market economy capable of resisting
competition on the big EU market.
Croatia already has a market economy and is working to improve its
functioning, the biggest problem being its competitiveness, which
still requires a lot of work, Mimica said.
In macroeconomic terms, Croatia is way ahead of countries that will
join the EU in 2004, Mimica said, adding the 75-78% support of the
public for integration in the EU and the existence of a political
consensus about the matter represented a significant advantage.
