The section was inaugurated by Radimir Cacic, the minister for
public works, reconstruction and construction. Prime Minister
Ivica Racan was also present.
This is the first of five highway sections that will be opened by the
end of the month, the PM said. This section is important for the area
as well as for linking Croatia with northern Europe, he said,
expressing satisfaction that Croatian companies which had worked
on the highway had met deadlines and done a good job.
Breznicki Hum-Novi Marof was the more demanding of the last two
sections of the 97-km-long Zagreb-Gorican highway, which is on the
Vb European corridor and part of Europe's highway grid.
The Zagreb-Gorican highway has five sections, one of which -- the
13.64-km-long Novi Marof-Varazdin -- should be opened for traffic
by November. The last section, 1.4 km from Gorican to the Hungarian
border, will follow.
Under the government's highway building plan, 1.4 billion kuna
(EUR187 million) worth of investments has been envisioned for the
Zagreb-Gorican highway from 2001 through 2005.
