ZAGREB, May 22 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament's committee on
human and minority rights on Thursday discussed the recent election
for minority councils and representatives, but it made no
conclusions. #L#
Members of the committee agreed that the election had been called
too early and that there had not been enough time for minority
associations to inform members of ethnic minorities about the role
of those councils.
The committee's chairman, Furio Radin, labelled the ballot as a
complete failure.
Radin rejected arguments that the election should not be repeated
given that the May 18 ballot had cost too much, i.e. 22 million kuna
(approx. 2.9 million euros). He said that the course and results of
any election, particularly of one involving a sensitive social
group, must not be linked with costs.
The committee's members did not agree with Radin's proposal that
the government should be asked to repeat the election, and decided
to make conclusions on the matter next week.
