The refurbishment programme covers fighter jets and is valued at
$US8.2 million involving a total of 12 MiG 21 jets, Croatian Defence
Minister Zeljka Antunovic stated.
It was necessary to upgrade the Croatian airforce, she said, until a
final a decision is made about the size of the future airforce.
After today's ceremony that was attended by the Croatian Airforce
Commander, Brigadier Viktor Koprivnjak, and representatives of the
Romanian "Aerostar", the partner in this programme of upgrading,
Minister Antunovic flew in one of the upgraded MiG planes
controlled by Colonel Ivica Ivandic.
The MiG 21 UM is a two seater intended to train pilots in combat
duties. The Croatian jets were equipped with new communication and
navigation equipment compatible to NATO standards and which should
extend the use of the jest by at least 10 years.
