The Commission on Sustainable Development, a functional commission
of the U.N.'s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the central
body of the World Organisation for Sustainable Development,
started its 11th session at the U.N. headquarters in New York on
Monday.
"Special emphasis should be placed on water and energy as there is
no other body which deals with them in a comprehensive way," said
Kovacevic, who heads Croatia's delegation at the session.
Speaking about the implementation of conclusions on sustainable
development adopted at last September's summit in Johannesburg,
Kovacevic stressed the importance of fighting poverty and
protecting natural resources as the bases of economic and social
development.
The two-week sitting of the Commission is the first meeting after
last year's summit in Johannesburg, when heads of state and
government, including Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, decided
that the Commission should be the central U.N. body in charge of
sustainable development.
Participants in this session are to tackle the Commission's future
work programme and organisation to facilitate the efficient and co-
ordinated implementation of the Johannesburg conclusions.
Speaking about Croatia's efforts regarding sustainable
development, Kovacevic said his country had set up a committee to
prepare a national sustainable development strategy and supervise
its implementation.
On Tuesday, Kovacevic will co-chair a ministerial round table
discussion, which will focus on the protection and management of
basic natural resources.
