Believing that teachers in such schools worked in aggravated
circumstances, the union seeks a 5-20% salary increase, depending
on the percentage of Romany children in classes.
According to teachers and unionists, one of the basic problems in
the education of Romany children is their complete ignorance of the
Croatian language. Also, Romany children go to school without the
basic hygienic and cultural habits, totally neglected in manners,
they are irresponsible, rough towards other children and often
towards teachers and other staff.
Filipovic said social and cultural problems were enormous, but
"Preporod" distanced itself from the political sizing up of the
problem.
A total of 839 Romany children are attending seven primary schools
in Medjimurje County.
