PULA, March 11 (Hina) - The government of Croatia's westernmost
county, Istria, has requested information from the ministries of
environmental protection and transport regarding preparations for
the transport of petrol by the DruzbAdria pipeline, which it says is
a project significant from the economic but risky from the
ecological point of view. #L#
The DruzbAdria project, a new investment for Croatia's Janaf
pipeline, envisages the transport of petrol from Russia to the
Omisalj terminal in the northern Adriatic, its transhipping on
tankers, and its export around the world, Istria government
representatives told journalists, adding the project would make
Omisalj the first export port for Russia's petrol on the Adriatic.
This project could significantly endanger not only the tourist but
the economic development of Kvarner Bay and Istria County because
of the other polluters in the northern Adriatic, like a thermo-
electric power plant, a port, a cement plant, and a shipyard, said
prefect Ivan Jakovcic.
The Istria government, therefore, has asked that the competent
ministries deliver documents relevant to reduce the ecological
risk to the Adriatic.
