ZAGREB, Feb 20 (Hina) - Marking the fifth anniversary of a huge
protest of workers in downtown Zagreb, leaders of the five Croatian
trade union federations on Thursday confirmed that they would stage
another big protest rally at noon, 27 February in St. Mark's Square
in the capital. #L#
After the convention of officials of all the five federations,
scheduled for the same day, some 5,000 representatives of the
federations and autonomous unions will head towards St. Mark's
Square to protest against the planned reductions of the workers'
rights.
The president of the Federation of Workers' Union of Croatia
(URSH), which initiated the February 1998 protest rally, said the
economic and social situation in Croatia was now worse than three
years ago (when the coalition came in power).
The URSH leader Boris Kunst said draft amendments to the Labour Law,
which, as he said, diminished workers' rights, helped unite the
federations, and warned that unionists had more and more reasons
for organising demonstrations.
