Half a century ago there were 214 million people above the age of 60
in the world while in 2025 this figure is expected to exceed one
billion.
The timely recognition of this process and the aftermath of such a
trend of growing old is important in order to anticipate and
organise adequate health care, Croatia's Deputy Prime Minister
Ante Simonic said.
Care for the elderly is becoming the most important aspect of health
care and will take a special place also in the reform of the health
sector, he said, adding the goal was to ensure that the elderly grew
old in an active and healthy fashion.
In Croatia the situation is the worst in the central Lika-Senj
County, which accounts for 22.68 percent of people over 65.
Karlovac County follows with 19.93 and Sibenik-Knin County with
19.46 percent.
On the other end, Istria County in the west accounts for 15.64 of
said figure and Zadar County for 15.69 percent.
The almanac was published by the City of Zagreb Public Health
Institute.
